If you were worried that your children lost a few of their wits during the summer, you won’t be the only one. Most parents think so but it turns out we may be right. A new U.S. Department of Education study has found that children who travelled during vacation regardless of the destination performed better in maths, reading, and general knowledge than peers who didn’t go on vacation. In reality, family travel is an integral aspect of a child’s learning that “contributes to the development of brains and enhances children’s fascination,” says Dr. William Norman.

Understanding the study

Professor. Norman and other researchers utilised data gathered by the Department of Education in The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of the Kindergarten Class database. The database includes information about 21,600 children who were followed from kindergarten through fifth grade and examined the early school experiences of children along with family and personal experiences, like summer activities.

The parents of around one-quarter of the children were questioned about their summer activities and their academic performance was evaluated using a series of tests for maths that are standardised reading, reading, and general knowledge.

The researchers then analysed the data to discover the connection between travel during summer and academic achievements in the first year of children’s school. The study specifically examined the possibility that taking a vacation and the amount of time taken off for vacations and locations visited were related to academic performance in the areas of mathematics, reading as well as general understanding.

The advantages of taking an escape

The results were awe-inspiring for many! Researchers could easily identify an important connection between academic performance and the need to take the family on a vacation:

  • Children who were with their families on vacation were more successful on academic assessments than children who did not travel.
  • The amount of time spent on family vacations significantly impacted academic performance.
  • Children who visited historical sites, museums, state parks, the zoo, or the beach have significantly higher scores in academic achievement than children who didn’t.

Also, it’s not necessary to visit only the historic places. Kerala , homestays in thiruvilwamala is known for  rapidly becoming a hot tourist destination because of its exotic ports with lush backwater canals, carpeted tea fields , and its rich tradition.
